What Fatigue Is And Is Not

done

Fatigue is a subjective condition for which there is no test.

When we get tired, our bodies need to rest. Generally, after a rest such as a good night's sleep, we feel refreshed.

With fatigue, you can get a good night's sleep and still wake up feeling exhausted. The feeling of exhaustion does not relate to physical activity or emotional stress.

Fatigue frequently includes the following:

  • You lack the strength to do the everyday things you used to do.
  • You feel weak and tired more quickly than usual.
  • You feel dizzy after walking short distances or climbing stairs.
  • Simple tasks leave you short-of-breath.
  • You experience feelings of sadness, frustration, irritability or hopelessness.
  • A diminished interest in life.
  • You find it difficult to concentrate or focus your attention. ("Attentional fatigue.")

Fatigue does not have set patterns. It is dynamic. Fatigue waxes and wanes over time -- perhaps even on a daily basis.
